Description

When selecting a battery management system (BMS) or battery protection board for your lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack, there are two key factors to consider:
1. Number of Cell Strings: Determine how many parallel strings of cells your battery pack has. You need to purchase a BMS corresponding to this number of strings.
2. Cell Chemistry: Identify the specific lithium-ion cell chemistry used in your pack. Common options are lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) with a nominal 3.2V per cell, or 18650/26650 lithium-ion ternary cells (NCM, NCA, etc.) with a nominal 3.6V or 3.7V per cell.
Look at the cell’s labeled nominal voltage – LiFePO4 is usually 3.2V while ternary cells are 3.6V/3.7V. Or check with the battery seller on the exact cell chemistry. Don’t rely just on form factor names like “18650” as those describe the physical dimensions, not the internal materials.
The current rating of the BMS relates to your application’s power needs. For example, choose 15A for motors under 250W, 20A under 500W, 30A under 800W. For motors over 1000W, consult the seller as the BMS current must not be lower than the controller limit.
Proper sizing of the BMS for both parallel strings and lithium chemistry is crucial for safe, optimized battery pack performance.
